Design process model

Redesign project design process model based on SAM

Initially, we followed SAM model (Successive Approximation Model) as we work on this project, however, we did encounter some difficulties along the way because of the "redesign" nature of our project, as well as the lack of time. We build our ideal design process model based on SAM, with an emphasis on iteration in the analysis and research phase.

Further explanation
Based on in-depth analysis of our actual design process and the obstacles we've encountered during the process, we have a great focus on "iteration" on each phase to ensure we are on the right track of understanding the learner, the stakeholder, and the problem.
Iterative analysis phase

Ideal outcome: In-depth analysis of the existing design

  • Needs Assessment

    • Interview with stakeholders

    • Review existing curriculum

    • Self- assessment on current resources

    • Conducting survey with the stakeholders and learners

  • Learner assessment

    • Learner characteristics (prior knowledge, background)

    • Learner needs

    • Creation of learner profiles

  • Create goals and objective

    • Creating preliminary goals & objectives

    • Refine with more targeted goals and objectives by

      • iterating the process

      • peer-reviewing with the class and stakeholders

Iterative design phase

Ideal outcome: Revamped prototype supported by theories

  • Ideation

    • Brainstorm design decisions

      • Find ways to leverage current resources and content

      • Identify additional tools that can support the new experience (short-form videos,  Slackbot reminders, new student slack channels, etc.)

    • Selecting possible media and technology

  • Design

    • Creating a logic model

    • Connecting ideas to learning theory and strategies

  • Prototyping

    • Design prototype

    • Test prototype

    • Redesign prototype with iterations

Iterative evaluation phase

Ideal outcome: Well-designed product based on rapid iterations

  • Pilot group

    • “Soft” launch

    • Close interaction with stakeholders

  • Evaluation

    • Usability testing

    • Survey

    • Interview

    • Think-aloud protocol

  • Revision

    • Revise the design based on the data analysis

    • Going back to the iterative design phase
